Rogers US/CAN Rate Increases on April 19th
Canadian telecommunication companies are under fire for charging some of the highest rates for cellular access in the world, which many believe is driven by pure greed. However, recent developments in the industry suggest that technology may render some traditional telecom services obsolete.
On April 19th, 2023, Rogers will increase the standard U.S. long-distance pay-per-use rate to $1 a minute, while other companies also charge for calls between Canada and the U.S. The high cost of these services may push consumers toward more affordable and innovative alternatives. The motivation behind the increase is currently unknown, and we have reached out to Rogers for comment.
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and video calling apps like FaceTime and WhatsApp offer convenience, accessibility, and advanced features that make them a preferred choice for many people. As messaging services and file sharing options are integrated, video calling apps become even more comprehensive and efficient, rendering traditional phone calls less necessary.
To remain relevant in a changing market, telecommunication companies must adapt and offer new and innovative services that cater to their customers’ needs. Failure to do so may render them moot in the face of ever-increasing technological advancements.
As Canadians continue to shift toward making international calls through apps, the telecom industry is under pressure to provide affordable and value-driven services. By embracing new technologies and offering real, competitive rates, telecommunication companies can stay ahead of the curve and meet the needs of their customers.
