By June 19, 2024, the Gaza Strip has been devastated with 37,396 people reported dead since the conflict erupted in October 2023, according to a report by The Lancet. Despite the gravity of these findings, mainstream media outlets have largely neglected this critical story, leaving many in the dark about the true scale of the catastrophe.

The Lancet's report, based on data from the Gaza Health Ministry and corroborated by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, reveals that the death toll has been verified by Israeli intelligence services, the UN, and the World Health Organization (WHO). Yet, Israeli authorities continue to dispute these figures, sowing doubt amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

The destruction of Gaza’s infrastructure has severely hindered the Health Ministry’s ability to collect data. With hospitals overwhelmed and media reports now a critical source of information, the Ministry estimates that 30% of the 35,091 deaths reported by May 10, 2024, remain unidentified. This adaptation, intended to maintain data accuracy under dire circumstances, has been manipulated by some to question the credibility of the figures. Independent assessments by organizations like Airwars, however, suggest the death toll might be even higher, with many victims' names unreported and countless bodies buried in the rubble of destroyed buildings.

The indirect consequences of this conflict are equally alarming. The destruction of healthcare facilities, combined with severe shortages of essential supplies and the population’s inability to seek refuge, predict a surge in deaths from reproductive, communicable, and non-communicable diseases. Historically, indirect deaths in conflicts can be three to fifteen times the number of direct deaths. Applying a conservative estimate, up to 186,000 deaths could result from this conflict, affecting 7.9% of Gaza’s population.

The Lancet’s findings underscore the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire and the swift distribution of humanitarian aid. The international community must ensure that medical supplies, food, and clean water reach those in need. Documenting the full scale of the suffering is crucial for historical accountability and post-war recovery efforts. The International Court of Justice has mandated Israel to preserve evidence related to allegations of genocide, a legal requirement that cannot be overlooked.

Despite the harrowing revelations, mainstream media has largely ignored The Lancet’s report. This omission highlights a troubling gap in coverage, where the voices of the suffering and the scale of the disaster are muted. The international community must demand better from media outlets, ensuring that the true cost of the conflict is brought to light and addressed with the urgency it demands.
