DIY Guide to Building & Upholstering Banquettes and Benches for Restaurants

Building and upholstering banquettes, benches, and other restaurant seating can be a fun and rewarding project that can add a personalized touch to your restaurant decor. In this blog post, we will provide step-by-step instructions on how to build and upholster banquettes, benches, and other restaurant seating.

Materials You Will Need:

Plywood sheets

2×4 lumber
2×2 lumber
Foam padding
Upholstery fabric
Screws
Drill
Saw
Staple gun
Fabric glue
Measuring tape
Sewing machine (optional)

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Plywood Sheets and Lumber

First, measure the desired size of the seating area and cut the plywood sheets and lumber to fit. Use a saw to cut the plywood sheets to the correct dimensions and use a drill to create pilot holes for the screws.

Step 2: Build the Frame

Using the cut 2×4 and 2×2 lumber, build the frame for the seating area. Use screws to attach the pieces of lumber together to create the frame. Make sure the frame is sturdy and level.

Step 3: Add Foam Padding

Cut the foam padding to fit the seating area and use fabric glue to attach the foam to the plywood. Make sure the foam is evenly distributed and smooth out any bumps or lumps.

Step 4: Upholstering

Measure and cut the upholstery fabric to fit the seating area. Use a staple gun to attach the fabric to the plywood, making sure to pull the fabric tight to avoid any wrinkles or sagging. Start at the center and work your way out, stapling one side and then the opposite side to ensure even tension.

If you have any corners or curves, cut the fabric on an angle and fold the fabric over to create a clean edge. Use the staple gun to secure the fabric in place.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

To give the seating area a finished look, add piping or trim to the edges. This can be done using a sewing machine to create a custom piece, or you can purchase premade piping or trim to attach to the edges with fabric glue or a staple gun. You can also add cushions or throw pillows for extra comfort and style.

Once you have completed all the steps, your custom-built and upholstered banquette, bench, or other seating is ready to be enjoyed by your restaurant’s customers. Not only will it provide comfortable seating, but it will also add a personalized touch to your restaurant’s decor that will set it apart from others.
